Delivered in conjuction withPrecise Training (RTO: 21090)

It is Australasia’s first fully comprehensive dog trainer certification program. The course has achieved Government certification and is Nationally recognised through the Australian Qualifications Framework and the Federal Government Dept. of Education, Science and Training, (DEST).

This course is undertaken by a wide range of people and many of them commence the course to increase their personal knowledge or to assist them in their current area of work with dogs.
One of the most important aspects of dog training is the understanding of the dog's mind. Without a good knowledge of how the dog thinks and why he does what he does, a person is always going to be encountering problems which they may not be able to get around, or which they may have inadvertently created themselves.
During the course students will gain an understanding of animal behaviour and learn how to mould a dog from an early age. Training enables dogs to live in our society as happy, animated companions.
Some of what students will learn will be things that they may have already guessed at on a subconscious level, but never given a second thought to. Now they will be able to truly understand what the dog is telling them.
Each course has evolved from the previous one and while the course remains relatively the same in principal, the content of the included topics is constantly being updated through research and development within the National Dog Trainers Federation.
Research is done via scientific journals and papers, observation and experience in the canine industry.
The program has been developed towards an excellent balance of hands-on training and theory.
All lectures are video taped which has a double advantage. Firstly, it allows students to concentrate on the speaker and then take notes at a later stage and secondly, it is training material which they can keep and revise in the future.

Course Instructors

The knowledge of the course instructors you will work with during the program, is based on years of hands-on experience, formal study and ongoing research.

    Dr Robert Holmes BVMS Ph.D.,
Widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading
experts on animal behaviour, is just one of the many
specialist instructors you will train with during the course.

Our dedicated and experienced team of instructors come together to ensure that graduates from the Professional Dog Trainers Course are the ‘Best in the Business’.
    Recognition of Prior Learning
The National Dog Trainers Federation (NDTF) offers recognition of prior learning (RPL) to suitably experienced or qualified applicants.
Prior learning may be due to current or previous employment with animals, or it may be that students have owned and trained animals of their own. We are happy to look at every application for RPL and speak each individual personally.
RPL means that successful applicants will reduce the total number of practical hours they are required to attend.
Prior learning may also provide students with exemption from certain modules. Each case will be looked at individually. if you wish to apply for RPL please fill out the appropriate section which you will find with your application form.
    Payment Options
There are various payment options available to students. These options include monthly instalments over an extended period.
Payments may be made by cheque, MasterCard, Visa and BankCard. cash payments are also accepted.
    Course Prerequisites
This course is open to people from all walks of life and the NDTF does not put stringent demands on criteria to participate. Because the NDTF is primarily concerned with education and networking within the canine industry in Australia, we are happy to assist in anyway we can to ensure you a position on the next available course.
Previous experience with dogs is not essential and you do not have to own your own dog, however you will require regular access to a dog. The ability to read, write and understand English is necessary. This requirement is not for our benefit but for yours.
The degree of difficulty in understanding and comprehension would be dramatically affected by an inability to communicate clearly with instructors and other students on the course.
    Duration / Time Commitment
The course is conducted on a part-time basis over an 8-month period. This includes theory lectures, workshops and practical training at selected dog training centres located throughout the metro area.
All aspects of the course are conducted outside normal business hours and should not interfere with your regular employment or education.

The NDTF runs the program 3 times per annum. Courses commence in January, May and September each year.

The course is also available through Distance Learning. Click HERE for Distance Learning options.

The required attendance at Training Workshops is 1 weekend per month. There have been a number of people over the years who do shift work and occasionally cannot attend a particular session. This is not normally a problem provided it only occurs infrequently.
All lectures are video taped and the DVD's are available for purchase on request. If there is a lecture where a number of students cannot attend, the lecture date is rescheduled to suit the students.
Occasionally people feel that they may not be able to fit the course into their everyday life of work and family. Those who have achieved their certification through this course over the last 12 years have found that meeting the required commitment does not take as much restructuring of their lives as they originally felt.
You will find that the number of hours spent with the practical training component of the course are quiet flexible. The required hours are spread across the 8 months of the course and equate to around 1 three hour session per week. During this time you will be required to attend accredited training centres in your area. The NDTF has centres available for you to train at, or we can help you to make the arrangements at an alternative training organisation.
The practical component of the course also requires you to attend a Boarding and Training facility were you will get the opportunity to handle and train a range a different dogs. This fantastic opportunity allows you to put into practice what you learn in the classroom and experience the training of dogs first hand.
