Specialist Trainers

The network of specialist trainers provided by the National Dog Trainers Federation includes qualified and accredited people in the following fields

    Assistance Dog

All dogs bred or chosen for training as Guide Dogs must have qualities of strength, endurance, friendliness and an ability to learn. Hearing Dogs are trained to alert partners to all sounds including ringing telephones, doorbells and whistling kettles.
Eight months minimum training is required for a Service Dog. These dogs need to learn up to 60 separate commands and perform remarkable tasks. They will pick things upfrom the floor, select items from a supermarket shelf and alert people when their owner requires help. They are taught to turn lights on and off, press buttons and carry bags.

    Scent Detection Dog

Training a dog to work in scent detection educates the dog to use its natural ability to pick up smells. Detection dogs are used for searching buildings for people, tracking people, narcotic detection, bomb detection, accelerant detection and the detection of forbidden substances in customs.

    Gun Dog

For a dog to be a confident and reliable gun dog, it needs to have the correct start in life. This form of training starts the moment the puppy is independent of its mother.

    Search & Rescue Dog

We are all familiar with the disaster in New York and the tireless effort of the men and women who worked to clear the area. Some of them were working side by side with canine partners who have been specially trained in the area of disaster rescue.

The dogs that loan themselves to this type of work are unique animals and obviously require specialist training to achieve the results they do. It is essential that the dogs chosen for this work must have exceptional scenting ability and regardless of breed, must be able to move over difficult terrain.

    Security / Law Enforcement Dog

If you work in security or law enforcement, you want a dog who has been trained to protect your life when the situation calls for it. Don't go out there without a guarantee of protection.

Before a dog can hope to become a guard it must undertake intensive training. Training ensures that the dog will respond to its handler in adverse conditions
