The National Dog Trainers Federation (NDTF) is Australia’s body for professional dog trainers. We are a nationally respected organisation dedicated to the standards, education, and recognition of dog trainers across the country. Founded in 1993, the NDTF was established to provide structure, credibility, and support in an industry that, at the time, lacked formal representation and cohesion. What began as a passionate initiative by a small group of committed professionals has grown into the most recognised and trusted name in Australian dog training education.
We represent a diverse community of trainers working across pet obedience, behaviour modification, working dog development, assistance and service dogs, canine sports, scent detection, and more. Our members include individuals new to the field, experienced practitioners, and some of the most respected experts in the industry.
As a non-profit professional body, the NDTF:
• Develops and maintains a nationally recognised qualification in dog behaviour and training.
• Promotes ethical and science-based practices, aligning with current animal welfare laws and behavioural research.
• Provides resources and support for ongoing professional development.
• Advocates for the credibility and professionalism of dog trainers in public, industry, and legislative spaces.
• Fosters a collaborative and inclusive community of trainers who value continuous learning and animal welfare.
We exist to support and educate those who work with dogs—and to ensure the role of the professional dog trainer is one of both competence and compassion.
Membership to the Federation allows dog trainers to connect with up to date industry issues, professional development opportunities, and community support. Completion of the NDTF accredited course mean formal recognition and accreditation across both the public and your peers in your area/s of expertise. The active participation of members in ongoing education is beneficial not only for personal and professional confidence and wellbeing, but also encourages the sharing of knowledge amongst the community.
