The National Dog Trainers Federation (NDTF) is Australia’s professional body supporting the education and development of dog trainers across a wide range of training disciplines. Established in 1993, the Federation was created to provide structure, education and professional standards within an industry that previously lacked national coordination and recognised training pathways.
Today, the NDTF represents a diverse community of trainers working in companion dog training, behaviour modification, assistance and support dogs, working dog development, canine sports scent detection and other specialised training areas. Our members include students beginning their careers, experienced trainers and industry experts who contribute to advancing professional standards within the field. The NDTF is committed to promoting dog training practices that are humane ethical and informed by behavioural science. Education delivered through the NDTF program emphasises the responsible application of learning theory, including reinforcement and punishment as defined within operant conditioning, while maintaining a strong focus on the welfare and emotional well-being of the dog.
As a national organisation, the Federation recognises that animal welfare legislation and regulatory frameworks differ across Australian states and territories.
